The National Recycling Coalition (NRC) recently hosted the Resource Recycling Conference in New Orleans, where they honored and recognized outstanding individuals, programs, and organizations for their achievements in the recycling industry. This year, STAR was honored to be awarded “Outstanding Recycling Organization,” alongside the Indiana Recycling Coalition. This award recognizes organizations with outstanding growth, programs, and leadership that have made a substantial impact in the recycling industry.

STAR had a great 2015-2016 year as it worked to spread the word about the huge impact the recycling industry has on Texas through the Texas Recycling Data Initiative (TRDI, 2015). STAR also worked to strengthen our partnerships and relationships with other NGOs in the state and beyond to provide increase value to our members through collaboration, consistent messaging, and professional development opportunities. As part of this effort, we’ve been able to get out in front of our members and the recycling industry in Texas by presenting at multiple conferences, local government events, and more. By working to engage sectors and companies that we have not typically worked with, our organization is developing a stronger understanding of what the recycling industry needs to grow in Texas.

“There is so much opportunity for increased recycling and materials management in Texas, and STAR is proud to be a part of what is coming down the line,” said STAR Executive Director Sara Nichols. “We are very appreciative of this award, which represents the hard work of our members: the communities and businesses in Texas moving recycling forward.”

Learn more about how STAR and its members are advancing recycling next month at the Texas Recycling Summit. Summit is the only statewide conference where recycling professionals can learn, collaborate, and support recycling efforts in Texas. We will also be recognizing award-winning recycling programs, many of which are run by STAR members, at the Texas Environmental Leadership Awards dinner.

We would like to thank the NRC and all of our partners and sponsors for their involvement and support and we look forward to continuing our work to help make a difference in the Texas recycling industry!
